The Law Society of Hong Kong has just concluded its prestigious Pro Bono and Community Service Award Presentation Ceremony 2023, honouring the remarkable individuals and organizations who have made a profound difference in our community through their selfless dedication.

To celebrate another year of getting recognised for our contribution to the community, Frances Tsang, Geraint Ho, Kajal Aswani and Saajandeep Singh delve into the profound impact that pro bono work has on both clients and solicitors. In fact, not only does it provide critical support to those facing legal challenges, but it also allows legal professionals to grow as advocates, expand their network, and deepen their understanding of diverse legal issues.

Moreover, the legacy that they leave through pro bono efforts is immeasurable. By dedicating time and expertise to help those who have been marginalized or disadvantaged, solicitors create a ripple effect of positive change that extends far beyond the courtroom. The impact resonates for generations to come, shaping a brighter future for our communities.

TRANSCRIPT

Today we explore the importance of giving back to the community, the benefits of pro-bono work, and how it can positively impact both lawyers and society as a whole. So, let’s jump right in!

What does legacy mean?

The definition of “Legacy” is something that is passed on. But legacy surely takes many forms. A Legacy may be of one’s faith, ethics and core values… A Legacy may be monetary or your property assets… A Legacy may come from one’s character, reputation and the life you lead – setting an example for others and to guide their futures.

Why give back?

As professionals, lawyers possess a unique set of skills and knowledge that can be a powerful force for positive change in society. They have the ability to champion justice, uphold the rule of law, and make a real difference in people’s lives. Giving back through pro-bono and community services allows Hugill & Ip to extend our impact beyond the regular caseloads.

The power of pro-bono

Pro-bono work, or providing legal services for free to those who cannot afford them, is an integral part of our DNA. It allows us to ensure access to justice for many, regardless of financial means. By dedicating our time and expertise to those in need, we can bridge the justice gap and make the system more equitable.

Benefits for lawyers

Engaging in pro-bono work is not only beneficial for the community but also for lawyers. It enhances specific professional skills, expands the professional and personal network, and boosts individual reputation. Pro-bono cases often present unique challenges that require creative problem-solving, enabling lawyers to grow as legal practitioners. For younger lawyers, it might also be a learning ground that goes above and beyond the usual work that they handle – many legal matters can really force many to think out-of-the-box!

Impact on our community

When lawyers engage in community services, they become agents of change. By offering legal advice, conducting workshops, or participating in outreach programs, Hugill & Ip can empower individuals and communities to navigate legal complexities. This, in turn, fosters trust in the legal system and promotes social cohesion.

Influencing the next generation

Lawyers have the power to inspire the next generation. By actively participating in pro-bono and community work, they show aspiring lawyers the importance of giving back. Lawyers committed on social responsibility encourage others to develop a sense of duty towards the community and instill in them the value of using their skills for the greater good.

Inspire others!

So, whether you’re a seasoned attorney or a law student, let’s embrace our obligation towards pro-bono and community services. Together, we can build a more just and inclusive society, one case at a time. Join us and make a difference – let’s shape a brighter future for all!
